About Jerri P. Sethna, M.D.

Welcome to Sethna Psych Associates. My name is Jerri P. Sethna, and I am a psychiatrist serving the Houston community. I wanted to take a little time to introduce myself, share some of my background, and explain how I approach psychiatric care.

I have had the privilege of working with individuals experiencing a wide range of emotional and psychiatric concerns throughout my career. My practice is grounded in the belief that good psychiatric care requires understanding the whole person. While symptoms and diagnoses are important, they are only part of the picture. Each person brings their own history, experiences, circumstances, and strengths into treatment, and I believe these factors should be considered when developing a treatment plan.

Areas of Focus & Clinical Experience:

Medical Psychiatry Bipolar Disorder Major Depressive Disorder Schizophrenia PTSD ADHD Anxiety Disorders Chemical Dependency Psychiatric Evaluations

Education & Clinical Residency

I completed my residency in Psychiatry at the University of Texas Medical Branch in Galveston in 1988. Since that time, I have remained committed to helping individuals better understand and manage their mental health while working toward greater emotional well-being and restoration.

Psychiatric Care

My practice focuses on medical psychiatry, with particular experience in the diagnosis and treatment of Bipolar Disorder, Major Depressive Disorder, Schizophrenia, Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD), ADHD, and Anxiety Disorders. Earlier in my career, I also served as the Director of Chemical Dependency at a psychiatric facility. This experience gave me the opportunity to work with individuals facing substance-related concerns as well as a wide range of other psychiatric conditions.

Comprehensive Psychiatric Evaluations

I also provide comprehensive psychiatric evaluations to help better understand a person’s symptoms, concerns, and treatment needs.

A careful psychiatric evaluation is an important part of effective treatment. Before developing a treatment plan, I want to understand what a person is experiencing, how those concerns are affecting their life, and what factors may be contributing to their difficulties. This allows treatment to be individualized rather than based solely on a diagnosis or a list of symptoms.

My Approach to Treatment

I believe that optimal mental health involves both the biological and emotional aspects of a person’s well-being. Medication can be an important part of treatment, but I also believe that medication and therapeutic interventions can work together to provide more comprehensive care.

My approach integrates my knowledge of psychopharmacology with an understanding of emotional health and the experiences that may contribute to psychological difficulties. Depending on a patient’s needs, treatment may involve medication, therapeutic interventions, or a combination of approaches.

I take the time to carefully consider the potential benefits and risks of treatment and work with each patient to develop an approach that is appropriate for their individual needs. My goal is not simply to reduce symptoms, but to help patients move toward a more balanced and restored state of mind.

A Safe and Supportive Environment

I understand that seeking psychiatric care can be difficult. Discussing personal struggles, changes in mood, depression, or other emotional concerns can leave a person feeling vulnerable.

For this reason, I believe it is important to create an environment where patients feel safe, supported, and validated. I want patients to feel comfortable asking questions, expressing concerns, and being honest about what they are experiencing.

My role is to provide medical expertise, guidance, and support while working with each individual to find a treatment approach that makes sense for them. I believe effective psychiatric care is built on trust, communication, and an understanding that every patient is different.

"It has been a privilege to serve the Houston community throughout my career. I remain committed to providing thoughtful, individualized psychiatric care and helping patients work toward emotional health, stability, and recovery."
