About Dr. Jimmy P. Sethna

Welcome to Sethna Psych Associates. My name is Jimmy P. Sethna, Psy.D., and I am a Licensed Psychologist and Clinical Neuropsychologist. I wanted to take a little time to introduce myself, tell you about my background, and share some of the things that have shaped the way I practice psychology.

Over the course of my career, I have had the opportunity to work with people in many different settings. I have worked in psychiatric nursing homes, youth corrections facilities, a college counseling center, state and private psychiatric hospitals, and private practice. Working in these different environments has taught me that there is no single way to understand or help a person. These experiences have given me the opportunity to work with people from very different backgrounds and with a wide variety of psychological, emotional, and cognitive concerns.

Areas of Focus & Subspecializations:

Neuropsychological Assessment Psychological Evaluations (13+) Forensic Neuropsychology Psychotherapy for Adults Memory & Cognitive Function Dementia & Alzheimer's Depression & Anxiety PTSD & Bipolar Disorder ADHD & OCD

Education and Training

I earned my Bachelor of Science in Psychology, with a minor in Writing and Rhetoric, from Trinity College in Hartford, Connecticut. I went on to earn my Master’s Degree in Clinical Psychology from the APA-accredited Illinois School of Professional Psychology in Chicago, Illinois.

I later earned my Doctorate in Clinical Psychology (Psy.D.) from the APA-accredited University of Denver in Denver, Colorado, with subspecializations in Neuropsychology and Assessment Psychology. As part of my doctoral training, I completed my internship at the San Antonio State Hospital.

I then completed a postdoctoral fellowship in Forensic Neuropsychology and Forensic Assessment Psychology through International Assessment Systems, Inc., a private practice in Miami, Florida.

Today, my practice focuses primarily on two areas: psychological assessment and psychotherapy.

Psychological Assessment

I provide comprehensive psychological and neuropsychological evaluations for individuals ages 13 and older.

A neuropsychological evaluation can be helpful when there are concerns about memory, attention, concentration, learning, thinking, or other changes in cognitive functioning. These evaluations can also help determine whether someone may be experiencing a neurocognitive disorder, such as Alzheimer’s disease or dementia.

I also conduct psychological evaluations to help identify and better understand a variety of mental health concerns, including depression, anxiety, bipolar disorder, schizophrenia, post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), ADHD, OCD, personality disorders, and other psychological conditions.

Understanding the Person Behind the Diagnosis

  • What is going on?
  • Why is it happening?
  • And what can we do about it?

A diagnosis is important, but understanding the person behind that diagnosis is just as important. When appropriate, I provide recommendations to help guide treatment, therapy, medication management, and other aspects of care. I also work with other providers when collaboration can be helpful to the patient.

Psychotherapy

I primarily provide psychotherapy to adults dealing with depression, anxiety, bipolar disorder, schizophrenia, PTSD, ADHD, and OCD.

My approach to therapy is integrative and individualized. I don’t believe that there is one approach that works for everyone. Each person brings their own history, personality, experiences, and circumstances into the therapy room.

I also believe that therapy should involve more than simply learning ways to manage symptoms. Coping skills can be very helpful, but I often want to understand what is underneath the difficulty as well. Through conversation, thoughtful questioning, and exploration, I work with patients to better understand the patterns and experiences that may be contributing to what they are struggling with today.

My goal is to help patients develop a better understanding of themselves and, ultimately, make meaningful changes in their lives.

My Vision for Sethna Psych Associates

I founded Sethna Psych Associates in 2013 because I felt there was a need for more psychological services in the Northern Houston community. I wanted to create a practice where people could receive high-quality psychological assessment and psychotherapy while also receiving individualized attention and care.

That philosophy has remained the same since the beginning.

I have always viewed each patient as a unique individual. A diagnosis may tell us something important, but it doesn’t tell us everything about the person. Two people can have the same diagnosis and have completely different experiences, histories, strengths, and needs. Because of this, I believe psychological care should be individualized. My goal is not simply to treat a diagnosis, but to understand the person who is experiencing it.

"I believe good psychological care starts with taking the time to understand the person rather than just the symptoms. It has been a privilege to serve the Northern Houston community since 2013. I am grateful to the patients who have trusted me with their care over the years, and I look forward to continuing to provide psychological services to our community."
